I battled powdery mildew from around five weeks into flowering until harvest at nine weeks. I believe I kept any infection off what I dried and plan on smoking.
I've seen mildew-affected bud before and it was really easy to spot. My question is that if you can't see mildew with the naked eye or with 40x magnification is there an expectation that the flowers are safe for consumption?
Does the growth-progression start or exist deep within flowers or move to flowers as a symptom of aggressive full-blowin infection? My experience would suggest that fan leaves, petioles, and/or stems are first affected and then if not managed moves into flowers, but that's just a guess.
Hate to be inhaling moldy cannabis that could put my health at risk on a guess.
Thanks for any info you can supply
I discovered this site through Toke-of-the-Town/The Daily Smoker which had some YouTube videos of Kyle and George Van Patten aka Jorge Cervantes. It was the first time I heard what TGA stood for. Cool.
Here is what i know i only had powder mildew once in flowering im sorry to hear u have that problem. powder mildew spores arrive in the leaf surface germinate at 78 degrees then tunnel in to the system of the plant and to the roots. once it has affected u in flowering i believe that the herb shouldnt be smoked .The medical bible says it is not suitable for smoking. It can get ya sick after awhile feels like it drillin a whole through your throat and congest ur lungs im not a doctor this is what i have xperienced.here is how i fixed it and havnt had any problems .Always fix problems in the vegetative stateI removed all plants and sterilized every bit of equipment i used all the above was conscious not to put any chemicals in the water carriers.when it was all don i attached sprayers to bottls of 91 % alcohol and finished the wwhole room off and closed it off for 24 hours i figure i had a medically clean room. i made sur my outtake and intake fans were at 4 to 1 negative pressue .I installed a dehumidifier and vented that out alsoin larger rooms i have multiple dehumidifiers.when the lights go off and temperature drops water falls out of the air onto plants in the dark not a good combination.keep adequate circulation fans goin in precise location to keep good air circulation.i dont think the herb can be saved once it hits your plants in the flowering stage i hope this will help.
I have a paper on this site about Powdery Mildew. I always say, "don't get it in the first place." Then I say, "get rid of it as quickly as possible."
Powdery mildew is usually restricted to the leaves of cannabis. There are two different fungi that cause Powdery Mildew:
1. Sphaerotheca macularis
2. Leveillula taurica
Both produce lots and lots of conidia, and spread by the slightest breeze to sites of secondary infection. Losses increase as plants mature.
Symptoms: Early-raised bumps or blisters on upper leaf surfaces. From these areas the powdery mycelium arise. Mildew can remain isolated in irregular pustules or develop all over the entire leaf. Leaves soon look like they were dusted with flour. Infected plants remain alive, or they prematurely yellow, brown and die. If the disease runs its course, black specks (fungal cleistothecia) appear in the powdery mycelium.
You need magnification of at least 80x power (100x would be better). Conidia and cleistothecia and L. taurica conidiophores emerge through stomates of the leaf.
Powdery Mildew affects the leaves not the buds.
If you have any fears, put your bud (s) in your oven for five minutes at 302 degrees F. This will kill: fungus, mold, microorganisms, spores.
My best recommendation is that you not have mold or mildew or any fungal disease in the first place..........................

Hi Native (and other cultivators!),
PM can be an annoyance, a blight or no problem at all. Everything comes down to the level of cleanliness in your growing environment, not to mention proper air flow, ventilation and climate (humidity) control. My biggest recommendation (aside from keeping things clean) would be to get your hands on a solution of colloidal silver (not as uncommon as it sounds). Colloidal silver kills pathogens, including powdery mildew! Just spray it on your foliage regularly and watch the PM disappear! Here's some background info on silver and colloidal silver in this and other applications (http://www.cashforsilverusa.com/medical-uses-make-silver-truly-shine). I hope this helps keep things greener in your garden! Cheers!
